Composition and Authority

The city council is comprised of six members, elected on an at-large basis, for staggered three-year terms. This means that all six represent the entire City population. 

The council is the legislative body of the City of Wasilla, established by ordinance under Wasilla Municipal Code Chapter 2.04.

The council approves the budget, sets rates of taxation (property tax and sales tax), and appropriates funds to provide for City services. Through laws passed, the council establishes policy statements, which are executed through administration. Additionally, the council deliberates on subjects of interest or impact upon residents.

Council Meeting Schedule

Regular council meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Regular meetings will not be held on a recognized City holiday, or the second meeting in December. (WMC 2.04.060)

Council meetings are held at Wasilla City Hall, Council Chambers, 290 E Herning Avenue, Wasilla. 

Special council meetings are held at the call of the mayor or at the call of the council. (WMC 2.04.060(B)). In the months of April and May, numerous special meetings are scheduled for discussion, consideration, and action on the proposed operating and capital budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.  

All meetings of the council are open to the public. The council welcomes public attendance and input from citizens to assist them in making decisions that reflect the needs and desires of the community.

Additionally, the schedule of public meetings is published in the Frontiersman newspaper and posted at Wasilla City Hall, 290 E Herning Avenue, Wasilla.

Council Meeting Packets

Agenda packets are available for review through the Meetings Portal. Regular meeting packets are scheduled for publication on Wednesday prior to the Monday council meeting.

Special meeting packets are published about five-days prior to the meeting.

Live-Stream Council Meetings

Council meetings are live streamed.

The video is also available the day after the meeting through the Meetings Portal. From the calendar within the portal, locate the meeting date and click on the date to load the meeting details. On the meeting details page, above the agenda is a video button that will take you to YouTube to view a video recording of the meeting.
