Wasilla provides services to well over 100,000 people in the surrounding area. Based on investment trends by large retailers and small business entrepreneurs, demographic trends, and new housing construction, the City of Wasilla continues to retain its position as the financial center, primary service, and retail center for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (Mat-Su)

The quality of life is excellent in Wasilla, the water is clean and abundant, the air is fresh, and the people are friendly. Wasilla embodies the small-town values of family, community, and caring for neighbors. Residents have easy access to major cities, other small towns, suburban areas, farmlands, and isolated cabins. Proximity to Anchorage and the magnificent coastal areas of the South-central region provides residents with additional economic, educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities.

Opportunities are limitless in Wasilla! Two area's of current focus are: 

The Downtown Development Plan is to revitalize. Our downtown area is:
• Close proximity to public Facilities; i.e. City Hall, Library, Public Safety, Post Office, etc.
• A retail shopping district that is distinct from the large malls,
• On-street parking, zero lot lines and 2 to 4 story multi-use buildings,
• A central district with design standards to enhance the aesthetics and the identity of the downtown,
• A design that encourages pedestrian access to shops and restaurants,
• A couplet that eases traffic congestion, and
• A landscaped town square.

Industrial Zone: The City operates the airport. There is both city and private land adjacent to the airport that is zoned Industrial. The Industrial Zone is near the railroad, the airport and the Parks highway. Manufacturing and or industry has room to create and grow while having access support to logistical needs in this area.
