Early Voting - What to Expect

Early voting is similar to voting at the polling place on Election Day. At the time the ballot is cast, the voter's eligibility to vote in the election is verified by the election official. The election official will look up the voter's name on the Voter List to verify that the registration is active and current, and that the voter is a qualified voter of the City. If the voter is not qualified to vote in the election or does not present valid identification to the election official, the voter must vote a questioned ballot.

If the voter is qualified to vote in the election and presents a valid form of identification, the election official will ask the voter to complete and sign the voter certificate on the early ballot envelope and on the register. The voter will then be given a ballot to vote. After the voter marks the ballot, the ballot is sealed in the voter's completed ballot envelope and dropped in the ballot box.

Early ballot envelopes are returned unopened to the Clerk’s Office. The Canvass Board will verify the information provided on the ballot envelope against the official voter registration roll to determine if the voter was qualified to vote at the election and if the ballot was properly cast.

If the ballot is rejected by the Canvass Board and not counted, the voter will receive written notification from the City Clerk approximately 30 days after the election. If the voter does not receive written notification, the ballot was counted.

Instructions and Sample Ballots

Various posters and information will be posted inside the polling place. Sample ballots are available to look at before voting. When a ballot measure is on the ballot the proposed law or the act being referred will be available to voters.

Political Persuasion Near the Polls is Unlawful

During the hours the polls are open, no person who is in the polling place or within 200 feet of any entrance of the polling place may attempt to persuade a person to vote for or against a candidate, proposition or question, nor may any person conduct other political activities. It is against Alaska law.
