Additional Information Regarding Public Records

It is the policy of the police department to provide access to public records and information so that the right of the people to remain informed is protected and to foster a transparent relationship between the police department and the community we serve.

Incident and collision reports are not considered a public record until they are complete.  We do not release drafts.  If the record you are requesting has criminal charges associated, the record will not be available to release until the police department has received notice of adjudication from the District Attorney's office (see AS 40.25.120 (6)(B)). Charging documents are usually available through the court system. If you are the defendant, you and/or your legal representation will receive discovery regarding the case.

Some records of the police department are exempt from public disclosure because they are declared privileged or confidential. Please refer to WMC 2.48.120 and AS 40.25.120 for exemptions of particular records.

The police department is not required to create, compile, summarize, outline, or in any other way create information from existing public records. Most records are available digitally, however the police department is not required to change the format of the records from the way they are maintained or disseminated during the normal course of business.

If you have questions about statistics or already compiled information please contact the record custodian at 907-352-5427 during normal business hours, you can also email wpdadmin@cityofwasilla.gov.
