The City of Wasilla Wastewater Treatment Plant was constructed in approximately 1989 to provide treatment for septic tank effluent. Effluent is treated in two aerated lagoons and disposed of in subsurface infiltration beds. A pilot study is being conducted to examine the use of the 77-acre parcel adjacent to the existing wastewater treatment plant for polishing treatment and/or disposal of effluent. The parcel consists primarily of wetlands and is owned by the City of Wasilla.

The pilot study will examine using the wetlands to naturally treat wastewater effluent. The initial concept is to apply treatment plant effluent to the vegetation and allow the natural gradient to slowly guide flow over the 77-acre parcel. Natural microbial and vegetation activity is expected to consume nutrients (i.e. nitrate) remaining in the wastewater. Nitrate is expected to act as a fertilizer and spur microbial and plant growth. This growth would consume the nitrate, further cleaning the wastewater. The pilot study will construct the basic infrastructure to measure the effectiveness of the wetland wastewater treatment concept. Construction for the proposed project is taking place between June 2018 and September 2018. Collection of background data on the area has begun. Pilot study discharges are anticipated to begin at the end of September.  Once treated effluent is discharged into the wetland, sampling will continue to determine impacts and effectiveness of the wetland disposal.

This website has been set up to share data collected. It will be updated as results become available.
