Do I have to declare candidacy for a specific seat?

Yes. The declaration of candidacy must be filled for a specific seat. If the candidate chooses to run for a different seat, another declaration of candidacy must be filed and the first withdrawn.

How will I know if my candidacy is certified?

Written notice to the candidate will be mailed within four business days of filing the declaration of candidacy. 

Is there a candidate filing fee?

No. There is no fee to file for office.

When are newly elected council members sworn into office?

Newly elected council members are generally sworn into office at the second council meeting in October, or the  next regular council meeting following the certification of election. The election results are generally certified the fist Monday of October. Visit the Meetings Portal for meeting information.

The newly elected mayor takes office on the first Monday following the certification of the election. The incoming mayor generally takes their oath of office in a small private swearing-in ceremony at City Hall.

Are runoff elections held? 

There is no runoff provision for the city council. Seats on the city council are filled by the candidate receiving the greatest number of votes.

If no candidate for mayor at the regular election receives more than forty percent (40%) of the votes cast, a runoff election shall be held between the two candidates who received the greatest number of votes. The runoff election will be held within four weeks after the certification of the regular election results.

 How do I file as a write-in candidate?

To file as a write-in candidate, a letter of intent must be filed with the City Clerk's Office. The letter of intent will be accepted beginning on the first business day after the close of the candidate filing period through 1:00 p.m. the day before Election Day.
